Overview
National Forensic Science Week recognizes the contribution that forensic science makes to the criminal justice system. This year, National Forensic Science Week was held September 16-22. Throughout the week, the Forensic Technology Center of Excellence (FTCOE) engaged with the community through online webinars, daily news e-blasts, and social media events, which included a forensic photo contest and digital awards. The target audience this year was early-career scientists. Events included short webinar presentations given by new investigators on novel research in forensic DNA analysis and forensic chemistry, and a live panel of forensic-decision makers discussing the challenges facing forensic science today and advice for entry-level practitioners on skills needed to succeed as a forensic scientist. Mixtures, Microhaps, And Modeling, Oh My!! Cutting-Edge Research In Forensic DNA Analysis From Early-Career Scientists

Early-career researchers that were awarded FTCOE travel sponsorships to the prestigious Gordon Research Conference and Seminar presented novel projects in forensic DNA analysis. Presentations were followed by a live question and answer session.

Making a Forensic Scientist: A Recipe for Success
Friday, September 21st from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM (ET)
This online session was geared toward early-career professionals in forensic science. Dr. John Morgan, the FTCOE Director at RTI International, provided an overview of emerging topics and challenges facing the forensic science field today. Additionally, a panel of hiring decision makers discussed tips for success, including what they look for in new-hires, traits of individuals that have succeeded in their organizations, and what hard and soft skills impact professional performance.

FTCOE newsletter subscribers received our National Forensic Science Week Daily News. The Daily News featured brief interviews with forensic practitioners and FTCOE team members and a forensic fun fact of the day.
SOCIAL MEDIA PHOTO CONTEST
The FTCOE hosted an online photo contest during National Forensic Science Week across all social media platforms. Winners received a digital certificate as recognition for their submission. Photos were tagged with @ForensicCOE and #ForensicPhoto. The contest launched on September 17th and winners were announced during the Early-Career Forensic Science Professionals Panel on September 21st.
