On-site Event Description

The Forensic Technology Center of Excellence (FTCOE) will assist the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) in hosting the annual NIJ Forensic Science Research and Development Symposium on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST at the 77th Annual American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. This will be a blended event with both an in-person and virtual component. The in-person component of the Research and Development Symposium will take place in Meeting Rooms 309/310 at the Baltimore Convention Center. 

The NIJ Forensic Science Research and Development Symposium is an open meeting where attendees can learn about NIJ-funded research across a variety of forensic science areas. AAFS meeting registration is not necessary. Feel free to stop by and listen to specific presentations or stay all day and learn about the diverse NIJ forensic science Research and Development portfolio. 

After the symposium concludes, there will be a Research and Development Poster Session from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. EST in Meeting Rooms 307/308 at the Baltimore Convention Center. The poster session will feature additional grantees in NIJ’s forensic research portfolio, and presenters will be at their posters to answer any questions you may have. If you cannot make the poster session timeslot, there will be a touchless self-guided tour that will feature a QR code to access a recorded presentation. The poster session doors will remain open till 8:00 p.m. EST. 

NIJ and the FTCOE are committed to improving the practice of forensic science and strengthening its impact by supporting research and development, rigorous technology evaluation and adoption, effective knowledge transfer and education, and comprehensive dissemination of best practices and guidelines to agencies dedicated to combating crime. Advancements within forensic science necessitate a forum to spread information and awareness.  

At the Research and Development Symposium, researchers and practitioners meet to discuss, discover, and share new approaches and applications to elevate the status of forensic science and increase its impact. The Research and Development Symposium was specifically designed to bring together practitioners and researchers to enhance information-sharing with the goal of moving research from theory to practice.
