Overview

The Forensic Technology Center of Excellence (FTCOE) assisted the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) in hosting the annual NIJ Forensic Science Research and Development (R&D) Symposium on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at the 77th Annual American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) conference in Baltimore, Maryland. This was a blended event with both an in-person and a virtual component. The in-person component of the R&D Symposium took place at the Baltimore Convention Center and virtual attendees could join via the live stream at the scheduled event time.
The 2025 NIJ Forensic Science R&D Symposium was an open meeting where attendees learned about NIJ-funded research across a variety of forensic science areas. AAFS meeting registration was not necessary. The archived version of the 2025 R&D Symposium is available now! Watch all 16 recorded podium presentations, browse the virtual poster gallery, and earn your certificate of completion for this years' event.
After the podium presentations concluded, there was an R&D Poster Session at the Baltimore Convention Center. The poster session featured additional grantees in NIJ’s forensic research portfolio. Each poster featured a QR code to access recorded presentations, and most presenters were at their posters to answer questions. Virtual attendees can browse the online poster gallery at their leisure!
NIJ and the FTCOE are committed to improving the practice of forensic science and strengthening its impact by supporting research and development, rigorous technology evaluation and adoption, effective knowledge transfer and education, and comprehensive dissemination of best practices and guidelines to agencies dedicated to combating crime. Advancements within forensic science necessitate a forum to spread information and awareness.
At the 2025 R&D Symposium, researchers and practitioners met to discuss, discover, and share new approaches and applications to elevate the status of forensic science and increase its impact. The R&D Symposium was specifically designed to bring together practitioners and researchers to enhance information sharing with the goal of moving research from theory to practice.
